Post college realization

I realized something interesting the other day after interviewing this kid that I was quite impressed by. I looked at his resume and college coursework and realized something fascinating probably only to me and co-worker whom I chatted with. This young kid had taken pretty much the same courses I had, only he received an Interaction Design Major. Now, I was in college in the mid nineties (92-97 ish) before there was any sort of interaction major, it was just coming on to the radar, and I was in an art school. Savannah College of Art and Design, which was, and as far as I can tell still continues to be really a pretty progressive learning environment. I received a BFA in Graphic Design and took 5 1/2 yrs to finish it. Many people have scoffed at this, however, it was due to the fact that I wanted to work more on the internet when I graduated versus print. I felt more of a freedom there, more in sync with that side of my courses. Print majors were the only ones officially available at the time and I had enjoyed computers and Dos programming as a kid. I loved the scientific, left side of my brain just as much as my right side. So I proceeded, much to my parents dismay at the time, cuz they weren't quite sure what in the heck I was doing, to take classes in the animation major... 2 classes of programming, an html, css and related technologies (flash) class my senior year, and a few animation classes like tradiditonal animation and 2D. I however ended up dumping the animation major. Taking hours upon hours to render something just didn't appeal to me and I watched the others struggle through hours and hours of long work in the lab. So I finished with BFA in Graphic Design.

What I didn't realize until the other day was, I had taken the interaction design course, before it existed! I was really thrilled with this since even at the time, my school couldn't figure out what the heck I was doing and I got PLENTY of flack for being unfocused. I was assumed to be a kid wandering around majors struggling with growing up, when in reality I just hadn't verbalized my thought process to people who mattered. And, as an adult now, I realize they never asked the right questions to find out what I was thinking, gee thanks! However hindsight is 20/20 and it wasn't their fault. I was just a different kid, pushing myself where I wanted to go. I didn't really need anyone to validate me, which is a strength now that I see in younger adults that I tend to admire. Those are the kids that go places, the kids who always survive. So cheers to you for being "difficult," you just don't know where you'll end up, but keep plugging and do what you love. I completely love what I do and wouldn't trade the process of how I got here for the world. I learned invaluable things along the way and settled on something I truly love to do in my soul. My art degree has helped me immensly. Their traditional style of learning the basics and using the computer as a tool is an asset I haven't always seen in many a designer. So paint, sculpt, animate, program and tinker around. In the long run all you learn helps you in one way or another you just have to put the puzzle pieces together. After all at 18 you're only 18, and at 32 you still feel 18 ;) so wing it!

So that was my revelation, which I feel pretty doggone proud of now looking back. Even better was talking to my dad about it, who consistently has been a very very proud dad. Seeing my sites, answering my random opinion questions, telling people about my new endeavors, bragging about my next position and wearing the latest attire from the company I am at. Which if you're in this business you know means bah, nothing. None-the-less, the money they spent to better my life paid off and I'm extrmely thankful they put up with me, I have a successful job, working in a great company and previous ones as well. :)
Ah yes, a perfect example of random chatterings of the day. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. I am on to a flash storyboard.

So... we're waiting for Landis' B test

I saw Landis' press conference... and heard Lance's comments... also heard Greg Lemond's... I'm still holding out hope. Let the B sample come back alright. I must say I was rather turned off at Lemond's comments though. He seems so ready to call everyone out for doping. I don't know, I've watched a few tv specials and such on him and think he was an awesome cyclist but I'm kind of sick of hearing from him how everyone's guilty. How does he know? Why does he accuse Lance of lying? Now he encourages Landis to tell the truth? It's just plain annoying. If these guys are doing it... the truth always comes out eventually. My thought is that the sport has really changed a lot, technology is playing a much, much bigger role then when Lemond was riding, Lance was obsessive about training, eating and researching better ways to improve his riding, Landis was there for that and has probably benefitted from Lance's research.
I'm stickin it out that it's not true, Still rooting for you Floyd.

Dropping this in here because it was interesting to me.
Jeff Taylor the founder of Monster.com is said to be launching a new site aimed at the 50+ generation on July 31st. Eons.com
Not too much out there about it just yet but from a Wall Street Journal article snippet it looks like a social network site aimed at seniors. We shall see I suppose. Only a few days to go!

1800 Flowers sneak peek redesign

So I went to 1800 flowers today (for my parents anniversary tomorrow - ARGH!!) and got a sneak peek at their new redesign! I like it! Here's a screenshot if you're not seeing it on the site. It looks like they're using some ajax technology, and it appears, from a user point of view, a much more responsive and faster site overall. Rollovers, drop down navigation, click on Login and a box pops down to allow you to login right there. On logging in, it doesn't take you to another page like it used to - for example I was looking at some orchids and clicked to login, the box dropped down, it allowed me to login and left me on the page I was viewing! Nice! It was definitely not this user friendly before. It used to redirect you to a login page, then back to the search/home yadda yadda... wander around the site and find your flowers again. The find a gift fast is pretty cool (pic shown below) and it's conveniently located right on the home page. Put in the date and it brings you right to all the ones with same day delivery. I'm definitely leaving them feedback. Kudos to 1800 Flowers!
Nice Job

Other things to check out on the site:
- Rollover "Enlarge image" on a product page
- Check out the new navigation rollovers
- Login from anywhere and watch what it does
- Simple ordering with the "who, what, when, where"
- nice additions to the "who" drop down... much easier!
- MUCH better location types
- eh, if you click on the same day delivery, uh, fill in the date for me???
- Nice 'ship to:' and 'delivery:' information at the top in checkout
- Couldn't find a continue shopping button in the checkout area (if I forgot something or needed something else)
- Nice search narrowing functionality on your products pages (pic below)

Yahoo redesigns!

ClickZ Article on it - July 17th. The redesign is officially live...

The redesign has been in preview mode since May and was designed to balance advertisers and user's needs. Much more customizable and interactive. (sounds google-esk and MSN-ish to me!)
It's in limited areas so here's the link to check it out.

To be honest... It looks a lot like AOL.com and a little itunes-y to me. Maybe it's the grey. :)
And... WHY can't I move the buckets around if it's my portal page? That, I think needs to be added... but then again I have never been a huge Yahoo fan or user so I can't say much.

A great interface design reference book

Designing Interfaces by Jennifer Tidwell... Though it came out ths past November I was looking for some new books to see if there was anything out there of interest and hadn't seen this one. (The title sounded so basic) A co-worker of mine showed me a copy he had just bought. I flipped through it a little at work and thought about it later. It struck me as a great book to have on hand for those days at work when I just can't think or wish I didn't have to. (yes I have those days, if you don't... congrats!)

It's one of those books I like to have on hand to flip through when I need to. It's probably absolutely wonderful for people who haven't been in a crazy formal HCI or UX environment and don't have access to something that has had years of testing to refer to. This book provides patterns for typical UX solutions. The biggest thing for people to understand when reading this, IMHO, is that it's not a book to go "oh we have a search, I'll use this pattern, done with my work for the day." It's not meant to be an answer. One still has their specific users for an app or product, still needs to analyze whether or not it should be used for their own purposes etc. etc.... but I'm not going to harp on that. It's a great collection of reusable solutions that have been developed over time, from what I've heard, in a really great environment (the MathWorks).

You might flip through it and go "uh I've been doing this a while, I already know this stuff. Awesome! I thought some of that as well, but I'm sure it will get me out of a pinch on a day I need it, give me ideas on a day I'm slogging through, and I can use it as a reference if I need to explain something to someone else.

Take a look at the amazon reviews. Some people complain about the print design of the book etc etc. I'm sorry but whatever. I'm glad there's another decent book out there for Ux-ers. Thanks Jennifer! Nice job!

Also found the site she appeared to use before actually sitting down and writing the book. Very nice alternative if you don't want another book cluttering your shelf.

Don't click it! Clickless interface

I had seen this a while back but it was being circulated recently at work so I felt the need to post it in case people hadn't already seen it. It's just an impressive UX thing to send people to. Enjoy if you haven't seen it before.
